Free Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) Template

Updated: May 26, 2023

Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) are compulsory for any high risk activity; the most common in Domestic Building scenarios being

  • a job where someone could fall from a height of more than 2 m

  • demolition of any structure that is load-bearing

  • there is a risk of disturbing asbestos

  • there is a structural alteration or repair that requires temporary support to prevent collapse

  • work that is being done near a road in use

  • work that is being done in an area where there is any movement of powered mobile plant (eg. bobcat, excavator, or crane)

In any of these circumstances it is required that the workers discuss a safe work method and sign a document that has been developed as a result of this discussion. An industry standard template is attached here and can be given to any contractor that comes on site to complete high risk work but does not provide their own SWMS to the site mananger/owner.
